Lincolnton and its surroundings in Lincoln County are definitely deserving of a spot among the best day trips from Charlotte. You’ll enjoy yourself here nearly any time of year, but the annual Apple Festival in October is probably the most popular time to be here. Naturally, the descriptor of best is subjective, and we’re pretty sure a lot of the cute small towns near Charlotte could definitely be described as such.

As you can see, there are so many wonderful places to visit that are just a short day trip from the city. This is a list of smaller local towns that surround Charlotte, NC. The places that I mentioned in this article are great to visit, and because there’s much to do in the towns you can have a fun day. Instead of going to one of the small towns close to Charlotte, you can also choose two towns that are near each other and visit them both in one day.

Some of our favorite family-friendly towns near Charlotte include Tega Cay, which is known for its top-notch schools and friendly residents. We also love Marvin, which is also excellent in terms of schools and diversity, and Davidson is fun because of its proximity to two lakes, making it a great option for active families. It’s one of the best small towns near Charlotte if you want to visit a place with many fun attractions. Pigeon Forge is home to a lot of attractions, of which the most famous one is Dollywood.

At this museum, you can learn about geology, paleontology, and much more. The town is known for the Blowing Rock, which is a unique rock formation with constant streams of wind that blow against it. Other fun activities in Boone include playing an escape game at Mysterium Escape Adventure, playing a football game at Kidd Brewer Stadium, or learning about history and the Hickory Ridge History Museum. Boone is a small town near Charlotte that you can reach in less than 2 hours. Region J of the North Carolina Councils of Government, of which a majority of the Charlotte area municipalities and counties belong, uses the term Centralina in its body's name, Centralina Council of Governments.
Salisbury's Main Street is always the high point of any visitor's trip, with its yummy ice cream parlor, fantastic live events, and perfect restaurants! Downtown Salisbury, Inc. has even been accredited by the Main Street America™ program as meeting a set of requirements that serve to better the community through its local economic growth. We've written before about why Davidson is one of the fastest-growing areas in the Charlotte metro. Adjacent to the gorgeous grounds of historical Davidson College, the downtown area is actually paved mostly with bricks, and exceptionally clean. Every year visitors and locals alike enjoy May Day, Movies on the Green, and a glittering "Christmas in Davidson" festival. The Billy Graham Library is a fitting tribute to one of America’s most famous and influential evangelists.
The town slogan is, "It's Happening Downtown!" because it truly is happening downtown. Shop while you walk and find everything from Wine & Spirits to musical instruments, antique rugs, cosmetics, and boutique pet accessories. It's filled with great events all year long including farmer's markets and holiday events. If you're looking for a quaint, yet lively town, Mooresville should be very high on your list.

Pinehurst is known for its golf courses, and when you visit this place, you should golf at one of the golf courses. There are also many great restaurants in the town, some of which have an incredible ocean view. You can get to Pawleys Island from Charlotte in about 3 hours and 45 minutes. Mystery Hill is a unique place in Blowing Rock with indoor and outdoor attractions. You can see optical illusions, play with bubbles, and learn new things at this place.
In addition to regularly scheduled games, there are special family nights and themed events, so be sure to check each team’s website for details. City leaders have taken big strides toward making Charlotte more pedestrian-friendly, and the Rail Trail is a perfect example. After the route for the local light-rail system was developed, this multi-use trail was created, both to maximize the areas alongside it and to connect to other public-use paths.
Blowing Rock is a small town that you can get to from Charlotte in about 2 hours. Another fun activity is to do a tour of the Hilton Head Distillery. Hilton Head Island is a small town in South Carolina that you can reach from Charlotte, by car, in less than 4 hours. The town also hosts many types of festivals and other types of events throughout the year.
