Too long being in one place doing the same thing for years makes one wonder if you could have been someone other than yourself - a much better you. I've never been a fan of Supertramp. This is a whiny song, I don't care for the vocals or the lyrics.
To grow, they have to realize there is more to life than just work. This song reminds me of my brother, who excelled at work but because his wife had become unpleasant would try to work all the holidays and overtime he could get, plus he would take the longest route home after work so as to shorten the amount of time he had to spend with her. They have since divorced after she left him.

It makes limited use of dynamic range compression and peak limiting, rejecting the loudness war trends of modern CD releases. You might have the Ghostery extension installed. This extension has a feature called 'The Human Web' that silently re-downloads all the pages you've recently visited in your browser in the background to collect data, which causes you to be blocked.
Excellent dynamic range, bright and crisply clear. A great album, an unbelievable album from MOFI. I have owned the early pressing, a couple of copies, and the CD.

Supertramp’s triumph, meanwhile, was the utter musicality and economical elegance of it all. There, throughout 1978, they rehearsed the material and prepared the demos that would eventually be recorded at the Village Recorder studio in LA. Has anybody ever considered the possibilty that the song is about the effects of living life on a stage? The pressures to constantly be "ON", and very rarely having the chance to be something else? So many artists find themselves stuck in the rut of constantly cranking out the same thing time after time, never allowed to be something else. To me, those lyrics could definately be interpreted as someone who has just given up hope and just decided to "take the long way home".
They did much better in previous albums. I always thought the meaning of, "take the long way home" was another way of saying, "take time to smell the roses". Don't worry about impressing others; don't worry about what your wife thinks of you; don't worry that your life's a mess; just relax and enjoy the little things in life - the things you only notice when you slow down and take the long way.

At the press meeting when Breakfast In America was presented, Roger Hodgson explained that this song is about a guy who thinks he's really cool ("So you think you're a romeo, playing a part in a picture show"), but it seems that he's the only one who thinks that. With Breakfast in America, Supertramp had a genuine blockbuster hit, topping the charts for four weeks in the U.S. and selling millions of copies worldwide; by the 1990s, the album had sold over 18 million units across the world. Although their previous records had some popular success, they never even hinted at the massive sales of Breakfast in America. Then again, Supertramp's earlier records weren't as pop-oriented as Breakfast. The majority of the album consisted of tightly written, catchy, well-constructed pop songs, like the hits 'The Logical Song', 'Take the Long Way Home', and 'Goodbye Stranger.'.

The oohs and the aahs at the end are the best part. Supertramp really knows how to create a mood. Having loved this song since it was released, what it speaks to me personally is a sense of needing to 'reset' one's outlook on the often out of control madness in our lives. I also interpret it as being about middle-age, when guys are usually very good at their jobs, but see that there is a limit to how far they can advance given the relatively short amount of time they have left in their working lives.

The core meaning of the song to me is that you don’t have to struggle to do or be anything. But many people, including me in many ways, don’t realize that yet. It takes until we are about 70 years old to realize that most of our struggles were pointless.
